January was a great start to the new year. The students have settled back after the Holiday break. We even welcomed a few new friends to our school. The theme for the month was Winter Animals and Hibernation. Many discussions and readings were based on habitat and places they live in during cold season, and how animals prepare for hibernation. The children enjoyed the book, The Mitten. The toddlers were able to explore the different animals from the book. They learned about animals that can live in the snow. The primary rooms created jobs to promote the lessons of the story.
The classes also touched base on Martin Luther King and Chinese New Year. They read books about the great African American hero. They discussed diversity, acceptance and treating each other with kindness. To continue our appreciation of different cultures we had a live presentation to celebrate Chinese New Year. The grandparents of one of our students returned for the second year in a row to perform the dragon dance with traditional Chinese music to celebrate the year of the Rat. The children absolutely loved the dancing dragon, moving to the beat of the drum. They laughed and cheered as the dragon paraded across the school.
